What is Innua?

Our logo, the INNUA as shown on the left, is very important to us. The INNUA is a mythical beast of Inuit mythology. The Inuit, literally translated as "the people", are the native inhabitants of the High Arctic in Canada. This bare, cold land north of the Arctic Circle is home to a people of great resource and endurance. The Inuit are an old race with their feet firmly planted in the past. Their culture and history is filled with myths (ATANUKANA) and legends that have been handed down for centuries.
Central amongst these myths is the legend of the INNUA. This mythological beast, half bird and half man, is part of the creation story as told in the Arctic. The origins of this tale recall the creation of the World, a time during which animals and humans had not become fully differentiated. During this time mythical beings underwent transformation between human and animal forms. This transformation is a common theme in Inuit art, frequently depicted in paintings and carvings.
The Innua, half bird and half man, was part of the "spirit world". The belief is that the spirit (soul) of any living thing cannot die. Thus on the death of the body, the INNUA comes down and moves the spirit on to the next host or body. This theme is a core belief of the Inuit, it is very common that on the birth of a child it will be given the name of a recently deceased person, believing that this is the new incarnation of the spirit. If the deceased had been a married man then it would be custom that his former wife (widow) would refer to the new child as "my husband", emphasizing the belief that the "spirit" had moved on.
The real translation of the word INNUA is complex. In the Inuit language any word beginning with an "I" means "to be". Therefore the full translation of Innua means "to be Master" or "to be Possessor" of the spirit. Thus the INNUA is the master or possessor of the spirit. This whole concept is a perfect match for a trading company. We respect the world, the culture, and the environment of our trading partners. It is our honour to have the responsibility to move the "spirit" on in a safe manner from our producer to the customer.
